Hey! Your holidays got cancelled? Well it’s time for you to think about travelling inside Germany! This time, I’m proposing a weekend trip to this beautiful historical city of Heidelberg!

The plan is quite simple: We’ll go there on July 17 (Friday) according to this train schedule:

  1. Dep: 19:27 Düsseldorf Hbf – Platform 16 (ICE 615 Coach No. 6)
  2. Arr: 21:36 Heidelberg Hbf

Since it’s going to be fairly late, I think it makes more sense to have dinner beforehand or eat on the train (there is a restaurant car but it’s up to our luck whether it’s open or not). I already booked a train ticket for 10 people, so please don’t try to buy it yourself. We’ll stay at the youth hostel of Heidelberg. Here as well I already got a reservation for 10 people so please don’t try to book anything yourself.

Then on Saturday, we’ll hike according to the trail below. The total distance is something like 21 km. It essentially follows what’s called Neckarsteig. The bus+train ticket (for the entire day) will cost 5,80€ per person (29€ for 5 ppl. – I’ll try to get the ticket beforehand for everyone). Let’s try to get the bus leaving at 9:04 (which will take us to Hbf first and then via S2 from platform 7 we can reach Neckarsteinach)

For Sunday, I suggest the short trail below, but since this will still give us some time, I guess we can go to a museum or something. This is by the way the trail that will allow you to take the photo just as the one in the featured image.

We can probably leave our stuff at the hostel and walk around, with the hope that they have a store room.

Then we’ll take a train back to Düsseldorf on Sunday following this schedule:

  1. Dep: 16:23 Heidelberg Hbf – Platform 5 (ICE 516)
  2. Arr: 18:32 Düsseldorf Hbf

Train+youth hostel costs 130€ per person.

A handful of items that you might be interested to think about taking:

  • Towels (usually youth hostels don’t offer it for free)
  • Swimming stuff (we never know)
  • Ear plugs
  • Eye masks
  • Bahncard (if you have one)

List of participants:

  1. Maria (Köln)
  2. Kartik (Köln)
  3. Zaman (Düsseldorf)
  4. Sam (Düsseldorf)
  5. Inna (Duisburg)
  6. Giampaolo (Duisburg)
  7. Lea (Duisburg)
