Hiking report

Hiking from Haan to Erkrath!

Here in North Rhine-Westphalia, there are a few places that are clearly underestimated as hiking locations. Erkrath, probably due to its proximity to Düsseldorf, is one of those places. However, there’s this one green stripe going from Gerresheim to Eller, which disconnects Erkrath from Düsseldorf. To be honest, behind this stripe the mentality of the people also slightly changes. In short: it’s not quite part of Düsseldorf, so you don’t have to be worried if you go hiking there.

We started at Haan, which is also a nice to place to hike. There’s this small river Düssel, which the name Düsseldorf is derived from, along the route. Whereas Düsseldorf is a rather large city, this small stream is actually so small that you might even notice that there’s water if you don’t pay attention. For us it might have been fortunate that Düssel wa so small, since such a small stream is more enjoyable for hikers than the huge rivers like the Rhine.

And also it wasn’t just flat all the time either. Except for the one Italian restaurant at Hochdahl, where we had break, was closed and the café nearby had only rude staff, I must say it was a lovely hike. The weather also allowed me to take a few pictures that I’ll be able to use for the banner pictures on couch surfing later on.

Today’s route can be download from this map (in kml-format) or this map (in gpx-format).
