Cycling along Canal du Midi!
This is the preceding trip to the Pentecost trip to Ax-les-Thermes, in a smaller group, so not a perfectly public event. The idea is to cycle from Toulouse to Sète along the Canal du Midi, which is one of the most beautiful canals in Europe.
Quick overview:
- May 29: Arrival in Toulouse
- May 30: Toulouse -> Castelnaudary (rent bikes in Toulouse)
- May 31: Castelnaudary -> Carcassonne
- June 1: Carcassonne -> Béziers
- June 2: Béziers -> Sète
- June 3: Sète -> Ax-les-Thermes (return bikes on the way in Toulouse)
Day I (May 29):
Arrival in Toulouse sometime during the day (Accommodation?). According to this page, train tickets will be available from 4 months before. I booked an apartment.
Day II (May 30):
We can rent a bicycle for example at Maison du Vélo, which offers the possibility of returning the bicycles in Sète afterwards (this costs 50€ more so maybe not). We will cycle from Toulouse to Castelnaudary according to the map below. I booked an apartment there.
Day III (May 31):
We cycle from Castelnaudary to Carcassonne. The track is relatively short, but since Carcassonne is an interesting city, I guess we can arrive there early and do sightseeing ?. I booked an apartment. They say the bikes can be put in the garage.
Day IV (June 1):
We cycle from Carcassonne to Béziers. This one is going to be fairly long – we should start fairly early in the morning. I already booked an apartment, but this place might not have a washing machine (although in the review they say that the owner is so friendly that we can use their washing machine).
Day V (June 2):
On the last day, we cycle from Béziers to Sète and hope that we can return the bicycles when we arrive there. If not … well let’s see :). On the way there, we might be able to swim (do not forget to bring swimming stuff). There’s also the museum of George Brassens in Sète (whoever that is). I booked an apartment.
Day VI (June 3):
Travelling from Sète to Ax-les-Thermes. It looks like there are connections every 2 hours, last one departing from 3pm. It costs around 40€. All connections go over Toulouse, so if we happen to have to return the bicycles there, we can leave early in the morning.
Estimated cost:
- Accommodations: 40€ (?) / night x 5 nights = 200€
- Renting a bicycle: 100€ (?)
- Train from Sète to Ax-les-Thermes: 40€ (?)
- Total ~340€
Things to clarify:
- Check whether the accommodation in Castelnaudary has space for bikes
- Check whether the accommodation in Béziers has space for bikes
- Check whether the accommodation in Sète has space for bikes
- Whether we’re gonna leave hiking stuff (for the subsequent weekend trip) in Toulouse
